Ukulele tuition

This little instrument can be enjoyed on so many levels from the most basic strumming to more advanced finger-picking and melody playing.

The ukulele is a small four-stringed instrument, easy and fun to play and well suited to young children as well as adults. It does not require a huge amount of physical strength. The instrument has surged in popularity and can be a good grounding for later guitar playing, or it can just be an instrument in its own right.

You will be taught both chord playing and finger style playing, using chord charts, tablature and guitar related techniques. Graded ukulele exams can also be facilitated through The Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) examining board. The ukulele is tuned to A-C-E-G which when strummed producing a positive sounding C6 chord making the instrument instantly playable. The tuning is similar to a guitar as the open strings on a ukulele are the same as those found at the 5th fret on a guitar’s top four strings. However the 4th string is tuned one octave higher (known as re-entrant tuning) which gives the instrument its special, attractive sound making it particularly suitable for banjo-style finger-picking. As a result a charming campanella (over-lapping) effect can be achieved, giving a rich sound despite the instrument’s small size.

I recommend purchasing a wooden concert size instrument with good metal tuners. An electric tuner is also essential as these instruments, particularly those at the lower-end of the market require frequent tuning.
