Extended arpeggios, broken chords are among the most typical and characteristic sounds on the guitar. Prelude No. 3 is a brief essay in “arabesques”, with a hint, every now and then, of something slightly French. Prelude No. 8 (The Romantic) deals with subtle variations in articulation, phrasing and tempo. It is highly rhapsodic and requires immensely sensitive musicianship as well as a virtuoso technique.

Usually preludes do not have a formal design by which they are characterised or by which they can always be recognized. It became interesting to cast these pieces in formal moulds which do have strongly identifyable features, such as the Rondo. Prelude No. 5 is in Rondo form, at times genial, at others rhythmically powerful, but always flowing in the style of numerous Baroque predecessors, with a continuous run of 16th notes.
